Portugal, Spain - Forest Fire UPDATE

- ECHO Daily flash of 17/10/2017

  • Several forest fires continue to burn across mainland Portugal and north-western Spain, as of 17 October at 6.30 UTC, causing casualties and damages.
  • According to the Portuguese National Authority for Civil Protection (ANPC), as of 17 October at 7:00 UTC all fires are currently under control.
  • As of 17 October at 6.30 UTC, in Portugal the death toll is reported to have reached 36 and 25 people have been injured.
  • The Spanish Civil Protection, as of 16 October at 13.30 UTC, reported 3 deaths in Galicia region (1 in Vigo town and 2 in Nigrán Parada town, Pontevedra province), 69 people evacuated in Galicia region and 35 in the Asturias region.
  • According the the Spanish Civil Protection, the situation in Spain as of 17 October, is expected to improve, following the rain in the whole north-west of the peninsula. Only 9 fires are still active (7 in Galicia and 2 in Asturias).
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated on 16 October at 17.26 UTC by Portuguese National Authority for Civil Protection (ANPC).
  • Over the next 24 hours, moderate to locally heavy rain could affect the already affected areas.
  • Following the Request for Assistance from Portugal on 15 October, Italy is providing two Canadairs through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism from the European Emergency Response Capacity (Voluntary Pool).
