Portugal, Spain - Forest Fire UPDATE

  • The forest fires situation is expected to improve across mainland Portugal and north-western Spain on 18 October.
  • According to the Portuguese National Authority for Civil Protection (ANPC), as of 18 October, two active fires are currently under control (in Coimbra District) and 17 more fires were being managed.
  • It is reported that in Portugal the death toll has reached 41. In addition, one person was reported missing and 71 people injured.
  • According to the Spanish Civil Protection, as of 18 October,  2 forest fires are still active, while 15 were being controlled.
  • The Spanish Civil Protection has reported three deaths in Galicia region (one in Vigo town and two in Nigrán Parada town, Pontevedra province).  69 people were evacuated in Galicia region and 35 in the Asturias region.
  • Following the request for assistance from Portugal on 15 October, two Canadairs from Italy were provided through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism from the European Emergency Response Capacity (Voluntary Pool). The Canadairs arrived in Montijo Military Base on 17 October.    
  • According to European Forest Fires Service (EFFIS), the fire danger risk on 18 October is expected from "very low" to "low" in large part of Portugal and up to "moderate" for southern Portugal.
  • To support the operations in Portugal, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated on 16 October and has delivered three delineation map. Three further grading maps are currently in production.
  • According to EFFIS, as of the same date, the fire danger risk is expected from "very low" to "low" throughout the affected regions in Spain.
  • Over the next 24 hours, moderate to locally heavy rains are forecasted for northern and southern Portugal and locally strong wind could affect southern Portugal.
  • Over the next 24 hours, moderate to locally heavy rains are forecasted for the Galicia and the Asturias regions (Spain).
