Sweden - Forest Fires Update

  • Several forest fires continue to affect Sweden. According to media, as of 23 July at 7:30 UTC, the most affected regions are Jämtland, Dalarna, Gävleborg and Västerbotten.
  • The Union Civil Protection Mechanism's response to the emergency so far includes water bombing planes from Italy, France and Portugal, with water bombing helicopters from Germany and Lithuania, and ground forest fire fighting forces from Poland, Germany, France and Denmark. In total, seven planes, six helicopters, 67 vehicles and some 340 personnel have been offered.
  • Two Emergency Response Coordination Centre liaison officers are on the ground. In addition, Copernicus Emergency Rapid Mapping Service (EMSR298) has produced 15 maps so far, with a further ten in production.
  • According to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), dry conditions and high temperatures are forecast for most of the country over the next 24 hours. The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) reports a fire danger forecast from moderate to high in central and southern Sweden, and up to very high in southern-eastern areas of the country.
