Comoros Islands - Cholera surge
published on 11/04/2024
A cholera outbreak was declared by the Union of Comoros on 2 February 2024.
As of 8 April, 1,187 suspected cases (tested by rapid diagnosis tests) and 22 deaths, have been reported, including 152 new cases including 5 new deaths recorded between 4 and 7 April.
UNICEF has reported its concerns regarding the overall lack of financial resources and human capacities, alerting about the 78 cases reported in 2 days in Domoni, the most important port after Mutsamudu on the island of Anjouan.
The case fatality rate is 2.5%, above the acceptable WHO threshold (<1%). Most of the deaths happen in communities and can be explained by the overall denial on the part of the population and the inadequate response resources, coverage and access to care.
