Philippines - Mindanao conflict

published on 29/05/2017
  • Fighting continues in Marawi city. According to the media, 103 people have been killed since fighting erupted last Tuesday. Almost 50% of the population of Marawi is now displaced (approx. 100 000 people). According to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARRM) Government, around 67 870 displaced people are in evacuation centres and 16 590 are home-based.
  • The ARMM Government carries out search and rescue of civilians trapped in various locations and provides food packs and water. Based on requests from the ARMM, UNICEF plans to support water supply, sanitation and hygiene in the evacuation centres. There is an immediate need for mobile toilets (portalets). The ARMM’s Department of Health is setting up emergency health stations at Baloi, Saguiaran and Provincial Capitol (Marawi).
  • With the number and location of displaced people still unclear, tracking of IDPs and providing a targeted response remain challenging. OCHA has been tasked with providing coordination and data management support to fill this gap in the humanitarian response. Access to some areas of displacement has become complex for security reasons, and might further deteriorate if the fighting continues.
