Indonesia - Volcanic eruption Mount Agung Update

published on 28/11/2017
  • The eruption of Mount Agung, which started on 25 November, is ongoing with a significant release of magmatic gases and increased volcanic earthquake activity. Volcanic ash reached a maximum height of 3 400 m from the peak on 27 November. The Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM/PVMBG) states that the volcanic activity of Agung is at a very high level and that the probability of a bigger eruption is increasing. The maximum alert level remains in place.
  • The Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) reports that volcanic ashes reached 9 km metres above sea level and continued to disperse toward the east. On 28 November, Ngurah Rai International Airport (Bali) and Lombok Praya International Airport remain closed.
  • The government of Indonesia has advised people living within a radius of 8-10 km from the crater (approximately 100 000 people) to immediately evacuate the areas. As of 27 November, local media reported that 40 000 people have already been evacuated.
  • Over the next 24 hours, thunderstorms and heavy rain may occur in Bali. Heavy ash fall coupled with heavy rainfall creates an increased risk of of lahars (mud flows with volcanic ash).
  • It is estimated that over 50 000 EU citizens are in Bali. The EU/Schengen Consular Group has activated its contingency plan and a consular team of Member States experts is providing consular support to tourists stranded in Bali International Airport. The Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) is monitoring the situation, in close contact with the EEAS and the EU Delegation.
