Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam - Tropical Cyclone KAI-TAK

  • The Tropical Cyclone KAI-TAK (named URDUJA in the Philippines) continued moving south-southwest, weakening  to a Tropical Depression. On 21 December at 0.00 UTC its centre was located 340 km north-east of Ranai city (Natuna Islands Regency, Indonesia), 740 km east of Kuala Terengganu (Terengganu state, Malaysia) and it had maximum sustained wind speed of 56 km/h (Tropical Depression). 
  • Over the next 24 hours it is forecast to continue moving south-west over the South China sea, weakening, heading toward West Malaysia. Heavy rain may occur over several regions of southern Vietnam, northern Borneo island, west Malaysia, southern Cambodia, southern Thailand and Sumatra island (Indonesia) over 21-24 December. 
  • According to local media, as of 21 December, at least 47 people have been killed in the Philippines. As national authorities mentioned on 20 December, 64 people were reported injured (in Samar, Leyte and Biliran provinces) and two more went missing (in Papanga and Romblon provinces). In addition, over 1 090 725 people have been affected by floods in 1 706 municipalities across six regions (V, VI, VII, VIII, Mimaropa and Caraga). They also reported, as of the same date, 224 908 people evacuated, of which 53 497 inside 235 evacuation centres.
  • According to local media, as of 21 December at 7.00 UTC, in Malaysia one person was reported dead in Sarawak state (Borneo Island).
