Sweden - Forest Fires

  • Sweden is experiencing unprecedented forest fires due to high temperatures and dry conditions. Fires continue to affect central, central-northern and central-southern parts of the country. The most affected regions remain Jämtland, Dalarna, Gävleborg and Västerbotten. Approximately 25 000 ha have been affected.
  • In total, 7 firefighting planes, 6 helicopters, 67 vehicles and over 340 personnel have been deployed through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (EUCPM) from Italy, France, Germany, Lithuania, Denmark, Portugal and Poland.
  • Copernicus Emergency Rapid Mapping Service (EMSR298) has produced 16 satellite maps so far to support the operation.
  • Over the next 24 hours, according to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), dry conditions and high temperatures are forecast for most of the country. The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) indicates that the fire danger forecast remains from moderate to high in the affected regions.
