Portugal - Forest Fire

  • Since 3 August a fire has been burning in the municipality of Monchique, southern Portugal mainland (Faro district, Portugal). This fire, as of 6 August at 8.00 UTC, has already burned an area of approximately 3 000 ha. 
  • The Portugues National Authority of Civil Protection has therefore triggered the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service to monitor the evolution of the forest fire.
  • According to local media, as of 6 August, hundreds have been evacuated and dozens of houses have been damaged in the municipality of Monchique.
  • JRC-EFFIS forecast, as of 6 August, the fire danger forecast remain very high for the area of the fires on 7 August. 
  • Over the next 24 hours, dry conditions and temperatures overtopping 30ºC degrees may affect the areas of the forest fires.
