Portugal – Forest fires UPDATE (Portuguese Civil Protection)

  • The forest fires in the municipality of Monchique (Faro district, Portugal) continue burning and it had two active fronts heading south-southeast toward the municipalities of Silves and Portimao. This fire, as of 8 August at 8.00 UTC, has already burned an area of approximately 17 300 ha.
  • The Portuguese National Authority of Civil Protection  activated the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service on 5 August at 16.11 UTC  to monitor the evolution of the forest fire.
  • According to local media, as of 8 August, 31 people were injured of which 30 lightly injured, hundreds have been evacuated in Monchique, Portimao and Silves and dozens of houses have been damaged in the municipality of Monchique.
  • JRC-EFFIS forecast, as of 8 August: the fire danger forecast remains from very high to extreme for the area on 8 and 9 of August.
  • Over the next 24 hours, dry conditions, temperatures overtopping 26ºC degrees and northwest winds up to 29 km/h may affect the areas of the forest fires.
