Portugal - Forest Fire UPDATE

  • The forest fires in the municipality of Monchique (Faro district, Portugal) continue to burn and are heading towards the south-southeast, close to the municipalities of Silves and Portimao. 
  • Media reported that the fire, as of 9 August at 8.00 UTC, has already burned an area of approximately 21 300 ha. 
  • The Portuguese National Authority of Civil Protection activated the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service on 5 August at 16.11 UTC to monitor the evolution of the forest fire. Spain is supporting the Portuguese authorities with aerial resources under a bilateral agreement.
  • According to local media, as of 9 August, 34 people were injured, hundreds have been evacuated in Monchique, Portimao, Enxerim and Silves and dozens of houses have been damaged in the municipality of Monchique.
  • JRC-EFFIS forecast, as of 9 August: the fire danger forecast remains from very high to extreme for the area on 9 and 10 of August. Over the next 24 hours, dry conditions, temperatures exceeding 29ºC degrees and northwest winds up to 30 km/h during the evening of 9 August may affect the areas of the forest fires.
  • Spain has provided bilateral support with three fire fighting planes, totalling 70 flying hours and 214 water drops as of 9 August.
