Ethiopia - Intercommunal violence, displacement

- ECHO Daily flash of 04/10/2018

  • Following a security incident on 26 September in which four local officials were killed in Kamashi zone, Benishangul Gumuz after meeting with Oromo state security officials, retaliatory attacks, targeting Oromo civilians and property were reported in multiple locations. The Communication Chief of Oromia region stated that at least 20 people were killed, but that this number could be higher. Security forces were deployed to all five affected woredas.
  • The inter-communal violence triggered the displacement to neighbouring Oromia state. As of 1 October, the number of IDPs hosted in east and west Wollega reached nearly 80 000. The majority are women and children from the Oromo and Amhara ethnic groups, hosted in schools and public buildings. Immediate concerns include a lack of basic household items, insufficient water (supply), limited sanitation facilities and food.
  • Government and NGOs' rapid assessments are ongoing. Federal government dispatched food while local authorities have provided cash and food assistance in IDP areas.
