France - Hydrocarbons spill

  • According to French national authorities, a collision between two ships occurred on 7 October in international waters off the Corsica coast. They also reported, as of 18 October, that a spill of hydrocarbons spread and affected several coastal areas of Saint-Tropez, Ramatuelle, La Croix-Valmer, Sainte-Maxime and the islands of Porquerolles. The monitor and cleaning activities have already started. The department of Var has activated the POLMAR Land on 16 October.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rain is expected to affect southern France. Meteoalarm has issued, as of 18 October, a yellow alert for floods in the Aude department. Strong winds East to Northeast are expected to affect the coastal areas of the Var department.
  • On 9 October, the EU Civil protection mechanism has been activated by French authorities in relation to the initial collision of the two vessels, requesting satellite imagery and a response vessel which have been provided by the European Maritime Safety Agency.
