According to French national authorities, a collision between two ships occurred on 7 October in international waters off the Corsica coast. They also reported, as of 18 October, that a spill of hydrocarbons spread and affected several coastal areas of Saint-Tropez, Ramatuelle, La Croix-Valmer, Sainte-Maxime and the islands of Porquerolles. The monitor and cleaning activities have already started. The department of Var has activated the POLMAR Land on 16 October.
Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rain is expected to affect southern France. Meteoalarm has issued, as of 18 October, a yellow alert for floods in the Aude department. Strong winds East to Northeast are expected to affect the coastal areas of the Var department.
On 9 October, the EU Civil protection mechanism has been activated by French authorities in relation to the initial collision of the two vessels, requesting satellite imagery and a response vessel which have been provided by the European Maritime Safety Agency.
