Heavy rainfall has affected northern Iraq (Nineveh and Salah al-Din Governorates) over the past two weeks, triggering flooding and damage.
As of 6 December at 8.00 UTC, 80 families have been evacuated, the al-Zanazel village is damaged and roads are flooded in southern Nineveh Governorates and in Mosul. More heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the next 24 hours.
The Qayarrah Airstrip and Jeddah internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, in Ninewa, were particularly affected by flooding. Among the approximately 7,500 families residing in Qayarrah Airstrip, 2,392 tents were flooded, forcing hundreds to take refuge in communal areas. Affected IDPs were assisted by DG ECHO supported partners with blankets, heaters and emergency health care.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), deployed a Rapid Assessment and Response Team to assess damage in the immediate aftermath. Over 600 camp residents were employed to clear drainage channels and repair roads to restore humanitarian access to the two IDP camps. More than 3,150 basic non-food item kits were also provided (e.g. mattresses, bedsheets, plastic sheeting, rechargeable lights, gas cooker, jerry cans and kitchen sets).
DG ECHO's partners remain ready to respond and will continue to work closely with the Government of Iraq’s Ministry of Migration and Displacement to ensure a timely and effective response and strengthened preparedness in IDP camps.
