Kenya - Disease outbreaks

- ECHO Daily flash of 01/06/2016

  • A cholera outbreak is spreading in Mandera with a total of 894 cumulative cases and 15 deaths since 12 April. In 2015 a total of 10 469 cases and 176 deaths were reported across the country. Since 1 January 2016, 4 860 cases and 67 deaths have been reported with 13% being lab confirmed. Counties with active cholera outbreaks are currently four: Wajir, Tana River, Garissa and more recently Mandera.
  • The cholera outbreak in Mandera is further aggravated by a simultaneous outbreak of Chikungunya, a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes, and suspected outbreak of dengue. About 50% of available health staff has also been infected, thus affecting the already limited response capacity.
  • In the neighbouring countries, cases of Chikungunya have been reported in Bulla Hawo (Somalia) and Siftu (Ethiopia).
