Central African Republic– Displacement

- ECHO Daily flash of 03/01/2017

  • A Government-led operation to close the Mpoko IDPs site, close to the airport in Bangui, is ongoing since mid-December. As of 31 December, 1 991 huts have been dismantled out of a total of 8 378. This concerns an estimated 5 435 IDPs out of a total of 28 301 in Mpoko site.
  • Households whose huts have been dismantled receive cash assistance ranging from 50 000 XAF to 100 000 XAF (depending on their size), in order to facilitate return to their areas of origin or re-installation. Most of the IDPs concerned have expressed their intention to return in their area of origin in the 3rd and 5th district of Bangui as well as in the neighbouring locality of Bimbo.
  • The operation is met with protests by some IDPs who consider the assistance insufficient. Increased community tensions have been reported, and several community infrastructures have been vandalized. In the return areas, IDPs are facing difficulties because their properties are being occupied and rent has increased.
