Colombia - Mud Slides

  • On 1 April heavy rains during the early morning hours (local time) in Mocoa (Putumayo Department) generated an increase in water levels of three rivers (Mocoa, Mulato, and Sancoyaco) triggering a major landslide with mud and rocks.
  • According to the National Risk Management Unit (UNGRD) the landslide caused the death of 193 people, local media also reports up to 300 people injured and the IFRC a further 220 missing.
  • The Government of Colombia, through the UNGRD, is leading the response efforts and also activated the USAR team of Bogota. The President of Colombia travelled immediately to the affected area. The UNGRD established a coordination centre in Mocoa.
  • The Government of Colombia, through the UNGRD, has informed international responders that at this time it does not require additional assistance. 
  • DG ECHO is in close contact with the humanitarian actors and monitoring the situation.
