India - Assam Flooding

  • The north eastern state of Assam continues to experience the effects of floods following the onset of monsoons.
  • According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), as of 18 June, 548 986 people in 719 villages of six districts (Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj) have been affected. The death toll has risen to 11.
  • The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel have evacuated 8 201 marooned people from the flood-hit districts of Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar. All major rivers are flowing above the danger levels.
  • The Government has opened up 225 relief camps in Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj, in which 159 652 flood-hit people are taking shelter. Additionally, 212 relief distribution centres have been opened up by the district administrations of Cachar and Karimganj.
  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in isolated places in the state till 23 June.
