Sweden - Forest Fires Update

  • Sweden is experiencing unprecedented forest fires due to high temperatures and dry conditions. There are active fires in central, central-northern and central-southern parts of the country. The most affected regions remain Jämtland, Dalarna and Gävleborg.
  • There are currently around 20 active forest fires and the three largest fires alone cover approx. 20 000 ha.
  • Swedish authorities (MSB) highlight that extreme fire risk will culminate in the next 24 hours, with a cold front containing rain likely to arrive over the course of the weekend.
  • Following the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on 16 July, assistance has been sent by Italy, Poland, France, Germany, Denmark, Portugal and Lithuania have all provided forest fire fighting assets and Turkish assistance (one Canadair) is also in the process of being deployed.
  • Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service produced 30 maps.
  • Sweden has also received assistance from Norway and Finland through the Nordic cooperation arrangement Nordred.
