India - Kerala Floods

published on 23/08/2018
  • The situation in Kerala State is slowly improving following reduced rainfall. The first displaced are returning to their homes, while the government's response shifts from search and rescue operations to emergency relief.
  • According to national authorities, the flood resulted in almost 400 deaths, 87 injured, and 40 missing. Over 1 million displaced persons are living in 5 645 temporary relief camps. Preliminary estimates indicate that over 20 000 shelters, nearly 10 000 km of road infrastructure and 42 632 hectares of crops have been damaged. The figures are likely to increase once access to remote areas is restored.
  • The Union Government of India announced the allocation of 76 MEUR (INR 600 Crores) to the response. Support is being provided by Indian states, Union ministries and corporate entities. Bilateral offers of assistance from the UAE, Maldives, and Qatar have been turned down by the Indian authorities, according to media reports.
  • DG ECHO is supporting the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) in providing immediate relief assistance to 25 000 people. A humanitarian expert has been deployed to Kerala from 21-27 August to assess the humanitarian situation.
