USA (California) - Forest fires and wildfires update

  • Following a week of devastation from intense wildfires in northern and southern California, as of 15 November at 8.00 UTC, there are still two major active fires, the Camp Fire (Butte County) which has burned an area of 52 609 ha is 35% contained and the Woolsey Fire (Ventura County) which has burned an area of approx. 39 301 ha is 52% contained.
  • The official death toll has reached 58. The Camp Fire - the deadliest in the California history - claimed 56 lives, while two others were killed by the Woolsey Fire. Three were injured, 10 317 structures destroyed and 163 damaged by the Camp Fire. National authorities also report, as of the same date, three injuries, 504 structures destroyed and 96 structures damaged by the Woolsey Fire. 130 people are still missing in northern California.
  • The fire danger forecast will remain high to very high across northern California and from high to extreme across southern California, according to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS).
