Malawi - Floods UPDATE

  • Following the heavy rains and floods affecting the country since last week, 45 people are reported dead, 577 people are injured and two more are reported as missing.
  • 739 790 people are affected and 15 185 households have been displaced.
  • Damage assessments, search and rescue operations and aid distribution are still ongoing. 187 temporary camps have been set up by the Government of Malawi in the affected districts.
  • Moderate to locally heavy rain with occasional thunderstorms are forecast over southern parts of the country between 14-17 March.
  • The European Commission's Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR347) was activated on 10 March upon World Food Programme request. So far, six maps have been produced.
